The Macintosh Hardware System Update is a set of software enhancements that improve the performance of certain Macintosh computers with System 7.1. (A list of the improvements appears at the end of this document.)
This update is not intended for Macintosh Performa computers. Do not install this update on a Macintosh Performa.
HOW TO INSTALL THE MACINTOSH HARDWARE SYSTEM UPDATE
The Installer automatically determines what software your computer needs, if any.
To install the software, follow these steps:
1. Open the icon labeled “Installer.”
2. Click the Install button.
3. When you see a message that installation is complete, click the Restart or Quit button as appropriate.
WHAT THE MACINTOSH HARDWARE SYSTEM UPDATE DOES
Different parts of the update software are used on different Macintosh models. The Installer installs only the parts your Macintosh needs, so you don’t need to determine what to install. If your Macintosh model is not listed below, there is no need to install this update.
The software accomplishes the following:
• Improves the reliability of high-speed modems and similar devices
(Affects the Macintosh LC, LC II, IIsi, IIvx, IIvi, Macintosh Classic II, Macintosh Quadra 900, and Macintosh Quadra 950)
• Improves the accuracy of the system’s clock
(Affects the Macintosh LC, LC II, IIsi, IIvx, IIvi, Macintosh Classic II, Macintosh Quadra 900, and Macintosh Quadra 950)
• Corrects problems ejecting floppy disks when the computer is shut down
(Affects the Macintosh IIsi, IIci, IIvx, IIvi, Macintosh Quadra 700, and Macintosh Quadra 950)
• Updates the Memory control panel to version 7.1.1, which improves performance in certain low memory conditions
(Affects the Macintosh IIvx and IIvi, all PowerBook models, and all Macintosh Quadra models.)
Apple strives to provide maximum reliability for its customers. This update is provided to address specific improvements for a small number of Apple Macintosh hardware customers. This update is for customers encountering the above listed behavior on the above listed Apple Macintosh models.
